Mark Cocker - naturalist and authorMark Cocker is a lifelong naturalist and author of some of the most influential books on nature in recent years, including Claxton: Field Notes from a Small Planet, Crow Country and Birds Britannica, which between them were short listed for six literary prizes. He is passionate about northernmost Scotland – under the guidance of his Orcadian partner, Mary! – and believes there’s no better place to encounter wildlife or to reflect upon nature’s importance for us all.

Limited to twelve places, this is a week devoted to sharing experience and to learning about wildlife and is ideal for those wishing to take their time. Above everything it will involve close observation of the entire 360 degrees of life. The group will look at it all, from epiphytes to eagles and from bumblebees to bottlenose dolphins.

In the words of a 2016 guest, “without exaggeration this week was a highlight of my life. Mark Cocker is an immensely knowledgeable all-round naturalist who wears his expertise lightly. He facilitated what became a kind of boiling cauldron of discovery into which each participant was able to drop their own tasty morsels of knowledge or enquiry. I learned a great deal while having a LOT of fun.”

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:

  • A boat trip on the Moray Firth to look for dolphins and sea birds.
  • Slow walks of discovery in a variety of Highland landscapes.
  • Illustrated talks and informal conversations with Mark Cocker.
  • Many of the features of our Aigas Wildlife weeks, including visits to our pine marten and badger hides.
  • Afternoon tea identification sessions with cake and ID guides!

Testimonial

The thing that bowled me over about Aigas wasn’t just the daily ospreys or the peregrine on its eyrie or the glorious peanut-eating pine marten - my first ever. More than anything it was the passion for nature and for sharing nature that came through among all the young staff at the field centre. It permeated the place. It was infectious. And it had its origins in the commitment shown by every member of the Lister-Kaye family.”  Mark Cocker, Author of Birds Britannica.
