A brilliant blend of all the best bits from our wildlife and history programmes!

DATES: 5 Aug - 12 Aug 2017

Summary

Glen StrathfarrarPerfect for the all-rounder, this holiday combines some of our finest wildlife spectacles with the Highlands’ most important historical sites. Watch pine martens and bottlenose dolphins, uncover the ancient and mystical at the Clava Cairns and wander the streets of the charming Georgian town of Cromarty – this programme has something for everyone!

Evenings will include special dinners in the baronial dining hall and after dinner readings from our author/director John Lister-Kaye. All this and visits to the famous Aigas wildlife hides to see pine marten and badgers.

Highlights Include:

Victorian House of AigasAigas. An introduction to Aigas itself, exploring its history and relating this to the history of the Highlands. Our expert rangers will lead you on our nature and archaeology trails which wind through the gardens and arboretum around the beaver loch and up onto the moorland to find remains of Bronze and Iron Age sites. We’ll discuss archaeology, history, wildlife and anything else we may encounter! Today will prepare you well for the days ahead.

Black Isle. This fascinating east coast peninsula offers superb wildlife watching and fascinating history. We’ll drive through some charming fishing villages, search for bottlenose dolphins at Chanonry Point and visit the magnificent sandstone ruins of Fortrose cathedral. At the tip of the peninsula we’ll visit the historical town of Cromarty, described as the jewel in the crown of native Scottish architecture.

We’ll visit Cromarty Courthouse, Hugh Miller’s Cottage and Cromarty East Church, of the BBC’s Restoration fame, ending up for tea at Foulis Castle, a private clan chieftain’s home with a lovely garden.

Glen AffricGlen Affric National Nature Reserve. This magnificent remnant Caledonian pinewood is widely considered one of the most scenic glens in Scotland. The ancient pines, rivers, lochs and mountains make this a truly unforgettable experience. We’ll wander amongst the gnarled trees looking at some of the flora and fauna unique to this rare habitat.

Historical Day. We’ll start at Culloden Battlefield, at the superb new battlefield visitors' centre.  It was here in 1746 that Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite army was so savagely routed by Cumberland’s well-disciplined troops and the Highlands changed forever.

'Bonnie' Prince CharlieWe go on to investigate life in the Stone Age at the Neolithic burial chambers at Clava Cairns. Our last stop is Cawdor Castle (August only) and gardens, home to the thanes of Cawdor, of Macbeth fame, since the 14th Century. Here you can explore extensive nature trails and gardens.

West Coast Day. Experience some of the most dramatic scenery the Highlands has to offer - the mountains, lochs and the turbulent geology of the coastline of Wester Ross. We’ll search for rare birds like the beautiful black-throated diver and the enormous white-tailed sea eagle as well as a visit to the Highlands’ most celebrated garden, the fabulous Inverewe gardens.

Beauly & Glen Strathfarrar. We’ll end with a selection of local historical sites like Beauly priory and the Erchless motte and a few of our local art galleries. We’ll spend the afternoon exploring Glen Strathfarrar, another beautiful Highland glen boasting red deer, golden eagles and stunning Highland scenery.
