Fallow Re-appear

26 February 2010

Yesterday the local biodiversity officer asked me if we saw fallow deer in these parts any more. I replied that I hadn't seen a fallow deer here for 15 years or more. Today I was driving into Beauly and in a field on the side of the road, bold as brass, were grazing four fallow deer; one with the lovely palmate antlers that you'd expect.

Fallow deer live in isolated groups in the forest. They range over large areas and spend only a short time in one area. But they can cause a great deal of damage by feeding on buds and leaves, and they will also strip bark from trees.
