Jacob New

Head Ranger

A passion for wildlife, and particularly wildlife photography, has taken Jacob around the world, most notably to the Peruvian Amazon where he worked at a Scientific Research Station. However it was his love for the Scottish Highlands and its wildlife, developed over many years of holidays to the west coast and islands, that brought him to Aigas and, unsurprisingly, led him to choose the Highlands as his home.

As a social geographer, one of the aspects of nature that most interests Jacob is the interaction between humans and the environment. From current conservation projects and land use through to history and folklore, every landscape tells a story and that is what Jacob often looks to share with guests and explore whilst guiding at Aigas. Already a keen birder, Jacob is constantly expanding his knowledge of all aspects of natural history; with a notable interest in bumblebees, butterflies and (with surprising passion) different breeds of sheep! In his spare time Jacob can often be found with a camera around his neck, climbing a mountain or working with the RSPB to survey birds ranging from dotterel and snow buntings to breeding black grouse.
