Wildflowers and Walking

Timed to match optimum flowering, this week combines gentle walks into the hills and glens to search for orchids, sundews and delicate moorland flowers like milkwort, tormentil and lousewort, as well as specialist rarities such a twinflower and one-flowered wintergreen, or St Olaf’s candlestick as it is sometimes known. The week is led by botanist David Bale

During the week you will learn how to find and identify a wide range of plants across a diversity of Highland habitats, and become familiar with the use of a hand lens and identification key.

We will spend a day at Loch Fleet, on the east coast, searching of coastal dune orchids, as well as wild pansies, one-flowered wintergreen and twinflower.

Walks in local moorland will reveal the insectivorous sundews and butterwort, milkworts, asphodel and heathers, whilst a variety of orchids can be found on grassland walks in our nearby Glen Cannich. All walks are low-level, ranger-led and gentle, however there might be the option to do a high level hike for those who so wish.
