We have just returned from a fabulous week at Aigas, a unique base from which to see the wildlife of the Highlands. The Field Centre is the stately home of Sir John and Lady Lucy Lister-Kaye, who are so welcoming and are the perfect hosts. They made us feel more like family guests than customers, which was immediately proved by the number of guests on our programme that have stayed there many times before. In fact, we seemed to be virtually the only first-timers, although it definitely won't be our last! The accommodation and meals are excellent, all under the personal supervision of Lady Lucy; and the wildlife programmes were extremely well organised. The programs themselves are led by both permanent and seasonal rangers, who all have a superb knowledge of the wildlife, history and geology of Scotland. Even the newer staff had all been trained extremely well, to have managed to learn so much knowledge to impart to us. It was also obvious that they all have genuine enthusiasm and take real personal pride in the work that they do for the centre. Aigas is set in a beautiful country setting, which contains its own loch and wildlife hides, containing a wide variety of Highland wildlife. It must be one of the few places where you could be lucky enough to see amongst other things, pine martens, otters and beavers. As well as learning so much, it was an extremely relaxing way to leave the rat-race for a week and do something much more full-filling instead. This is a very special place and a testament to the Lister-Kaye's for creating such a wonderful environment and also to all of the staff who do such a first-class job. We will definitely return again in the future to experience some of their other wildlife programmes.

My previous 2 weeks in Scotland had been as part of a photo tour that was long on photo ops, but extremely light on information about history, geology, lore, ecology, etc etc. The wonderfully trained, articulate and enthusiastic rangers at Aigas filled in all the gaps and then some. Sir John's lecture about the history of the Highlands brought the Jacobite Rebellion and so much more into sharp focus, with application to US history and today's world situations. I could have listened for another hour. Lady Lucy's concern for the needs of her guests and the dietary peculiarities of each one make the meals a delight, and she, Hermione and the rest of the staff make it clear they will do their best to make everyone's stay as wonderful as they can. And everything is done with such ease and grace. Thanks to all for a wonderful stay. I am sending my friends (and maybe will sneak back with one of them)!

Though the day trips were occasionally long, the pace was comfortable and time was allowed to enjoy the scenery. I am a birder, so this was a better fit than some bird-centric trips that are just 'tick the sighting and drive off'. I appreciated the fact there is no single supplement for a private cabin room and that dietary needs are well cared for. We had both gluten-free and vegetarian guests and it was often difficult to tell the special meal from the normal menu. It was all very tasty and plentiful. Breakfast is a cold buffet (with hot oatmeal)! Lunch typically a pack a bag buffet, and dinner a full served meal. Cabins are several bedrooms arranged around a common living room and kitchen. They are slightly spread out, but all easily walkable to the main house. They are well heated with individual radiators. The grounds are extensive with trails, gardens and viewing hides and easily manageable to visit in your down time. There are numerous planned weeks or long weekend programs as well as a bed and breakfast, or short let accommodations. My week at Aigas was a real treat for me and will be one of my Scotland highlights.
